Warm July weather and intense solar radiation

Weather:July is the warmest month of the year and very rainy. It is the height of the monsoon season. It rains about 2/3 of the days of the month, mainly at night, for a total of 117 mm of rain. The average nightly low temperature is 10 °C (50 °F). The average daily high temperature is 23 °C (73 °F). The high altitude of 3,600 meters (12,000 feet) makes it feel warmer, and the days arecomfortable and even warm.

Clothing:Dress for the night temperature drop with a jacket, trousers, T-shirts, rain gear and water resistant shoes. Cover up if you have sensitive skin because of the UV radiation. Sun glasses and a sun hat help. A coat and winter gear are necessary if you go up to higher elevations.

Things to Do in Lhasa in July

Visit the Potala Palace:Thisworld famous Lhasa landmarkis beautiful and recommended by UNESCO. Construction started in 641, and the Dalai Lamas once lived there. There are 1,000 rooms, and it is 13 stories high. In the changing seasons, the various sides of it present beautiful views. Most tourists must acclimate for two or three days to make the climb up easier.

Enjoy Namtso Lake

Walk at Namtso Lake:This high salt lake four hours from Lhasa makes for a great day trip or overnighter. It is reputed asone of Tibet's best scenic places. It is one of the highest lakes in the world (4,718 meters or 15,000 feet). The sunsets are amazing. It is best to acclimate for two or three days in Lhasa valley before going.

Ganden Monastery:This big monastery is one of the three main ones, and it is still very active unlike the ones in the city proper. It is interesting and is probably themost scenic monasteryin Tibet. It is on a scenic mountain at an elevation of 4,300 meters or 14,000, and there is good hiking around it. The 1½ hour drive there is scenic. There is a popular and scenic hike from Ganden Monastery to Samye, but the weather is probably too inclement for comfort. The hike is better in the fall or spring without the monsoon.

Festivals Around Lhasa

Summer Festivals:In July and August, Tibetans hold their outdoor market fairs, encampments, festivals, and sports contests when the weather is the warmest and the grass the lushest. The exact dates of these festivals depends on their lunar calendar.
