In Hong Kong, there are many large areas to hike, camp, canoe, swim, surf and have fun in. There are four main areas with natural parkland or islands that are big enough to really enjoy yourself and get into places where you won't see people or houses. Hong Kong is actually a big territory of about 1,100 square kilometers. About 60 or 70 percent of Hong Kong's territory is zoned as undeveloped country park land. There are large natural areas where people can have fun around Sai Kung in the eastern part of Hong Kong, in the country park area north of Kowloon, on Lantau Island, and on Hong Kong Island.

Eastern Hong Kong
The eastern side of Hong Kong around Sai Kung has very large undeveloped parks, geo-parks, and undeveloped coastline with great beaches. There are places to surf, camp out, hike, swim, dive and canoe. Along with Lantau Island's parks, the big tracks of country park in the area are Hong Kong's best outdoor areas. Because of the unusual rock formations, empty beaches, waterfalls, and long stretches of trail, the park lands in eastern Hong Kong are great places to hike.
North of Kowloon in North-Central Hong Kong
An area in the new territories with good hiking over high hills is the big Tai Mo Shan Country park and the adjacent Shing Mun Country Park north of Kowloon. The advantage of these parks as a place for some outdoor recreation and adventure is that they are big and next to Kowloon.
Lantau Island
Lantau Island is surprising because of its size and general emptiness. It also has high mountains like Tai Mo Shan near Kowloon, but you can hike to the top of them, and you can't hike to the top of Tai Mo Shan. Lantau Peak is the second highest peak in Hong Kong, and depending on how you go up, it can be an easy hike climbing the stairs.
Hong Kong Island
It may seem strange, but Hong Kong Island that was the original British colony in the area and that now has the city of Hong Kong that has about the average tallest skyline of any city of the world, also has good hiking trails that even go up to near the top of Victoria Peak and its Peak Tower mall. If you like views of the city, then the 50 kilometer long Hong Kong Trail is for you.
